Top tips

  • When building your profile, try to write in concise, action-orientated statements and be genuine and truthful in what you say
  • A great starting point for making connections is to find graduates from your degree by filtering the Imperial College LinkedIn alumni page
  • LinkedIn also allows you to search for ‘Groups’ which is a great way to quickly find people working in the industry you’re interested in
  • When you try to connect with someone, you should always add a note to introduce yourself – explain who you are, how you found them and why you’d like to connect
  • In conversations with new connections, stay clear of controversial topics such as politics or ethical debates
  • Don’t take it personally if someone doesn’t respond to you – the likelihood is that they are busy and just may not have time to reply to you
  • Keep your profile updated with current skills and information

LinkedIn Learning

Networking, though immensely valuable, is not the only way that LinkedIn can make you more desirable to an employer.

LinkedIn Learning is an online library created by LinkedIn to help you learn software tools and skills through instructional videos hosted by industry experts. There’s even one about using LinkedIn!

All students and staff at Imperial have free access to the extensive library and graduates have access for one year after completing their studies. So, what are you waiting for? Start learning today.
