Students from the Faculty of Medicine celebrated their achievements this week at the Royal Albert Hall.

Wednesday 8 May was a special day for  over 800 postgraduate students from the Faculty of Medicine, who received their degrees, cheered on by guests. 

Professor Deborah Ashby, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, said: “Our new graduates have worked long and hard for this distinction and join the ranks of distinguished Faculty of Medicine alumni who are a source of great pride and admiration to us all. I hope that as alumni they will continue to be part of our dynamic community and help us write the next chapters of our shared Imperial story."

Outstanding Student Achievement Awards 

The Outstanding Student Achievement Awards are awarded to students who have achieved excellence in extramural activities that bring credit to the College.   

Miss Aglaia Freccero 

Miss Aglaia Freccero is a first-year PhD student in Imperial's Department of Brain Sciences. Aglaia is a President's PhD scholar in the Division of Psychiatry, supervised by Prof Dasha Nicholls. Her research investigates Miss Aglaia Freccero the potential of delivering AI-informed digital behavioural interventions to support adolescents' mental health in schools. She works at the intersection of the fields of digital health, psychiatry and population health. 

Aglaia is a passionate mental health activist. She held the position of Mental Health Officer at Imperial College Union from 2022 to 2024, as part of which she co-led the creation and implementation of Imperial's first institutional mental health strategy. She is also a member of the college's learning analytics steering group and conducts outreach projects for the Mental Health Research Network. In 2023, she was awarded the Student Award for Outstanding Achievement as a demonstration of her contribution to the life and excellence of the college.  

Dr Tunde Oyebaniji 

Dr Tunde Oyebaniji

Dr Tunde Oyebamiji was a postgraduate student in the School of Public Health. Dr Oyebamiji’s work combines technology and public health services to improve maternal and child health in Nigeria. He was a
Chevening Scholar at Imperial from 2022–2023, during which time he developed Mediverse, software that allows healthcare facilities to digitise their operations so they can better access patient information and provide services in underserved communities. 

Imperial College Medal 

The Imperial College Medal is awarded for the meritorious or praiseworthy service to the College or for having otherwise enhanced its reputation, mission and objectives. 

Professor Peter JM Openshaw 

Professor Peter JM Openshaw

Professor Peter JM Openshaw CBE is Professor of Experimental Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine. Professor Openshaw is a respiratory physician and immunologist, studying how the immune system protects against viral infection but also causes disease. He has worked on Respiratory Syncytial Virus and influenza since the 1980s leading a large Wellcome Trust funded national collaboration: Mechanisms of Severe Acute Influenza Consortium MOSAIC (2009-12), recruiting cases of severe influenza during the influenza pandemic of 2009-2010. He is also the Director of the HIC-Vac consortium, which promotes the use of human experimental infection to accelerate vaccine development. 

President’s Award 

The President’s Medals are awarded to recognise staff members who have made outstanding contributions to research, external engagement, innovation, and research support or supervision. 

Dr Lindsay H Dewa 

Dr Lindsay H Dewa

Dr Lindsay H Dewa is an Advanced Research Fellow in Mental Health in the School of Public Health. She is also an Honorary Research Psychologist at West London NHS Trust. Dr Dewa works across the clinical and public mental health interface, investigating the use of digital technologies to support better mental health in young people. Her work primarily focuses on preventing and detecting youth mental health deterioration using digital devices and lifestyle factors (such as sleep and social connection). She is also an Imperial Mental Health Research Network steering group original member, and member of Institute of Global Health Innovation mental health and wellbeing, and Royal College of Psychiatrists Young Adult Mental Health working groups.
