Explore sustainable science at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition
VALUED team
Imperial researchers will present HappyMAT—a dynamic, interactive exploration of sustainable materials at this year's prestigious science event.
HAPPYMAT's participation in this year's Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition is part of the EPSRC-funded VALUED network’s dedicated aim to reach a broader audience, and will demonstrate how cutting-edge research at Imperial College London, University of Cambridge and University of Bristol, is helping to drive a more sustainable future through material innovation.
Led by Professor Magda Titirici, Dr Sushila Marlow, Dr Niamh Hartley, Dr Robert Hunter and Dr Kalpana Balaskandan from the Department of Chemical Engineering-and covering research across the VALUED network-HAPPYMAT invites visitors to explore the incredible potential of biomass, following its lifecycle from raw sources to complicated materials like cellulose nanocrystals and biochars from hydrothermal carbonization, and finally to high-tech uses in batteries, printing, packaging and beyond.
Interactive activities include a 3D-printed logo prize for matching biomass to its application, a grip-strength competition mimicking the pressure of natural coal formation, and a chemistry robotics demonstration - bringing lab science to life at the touch of a button. Visitors can also play with pressure-sensitive biodegradable vibrant colour pouches and enjoy structurally coloured art with 3D glasses.
At HAPPYMAT, we are excited to share some of the amazing products we can create from natural materials and their uses, ranging from sequins and packaging to batteries and 3D printed scaffolds. Through interacting with completely bio-based materials and our chemistry robots, visitors will learn the importance of replacing fossil fuel-sourced materials and how nature can provide us with the solutions. Additionally, the HAPPYMAT team, represented by Professor Magda Titirici, will deliver a dedicated talk on Wednesday 2 July, 12.00-12:30 BST in the Dining Room at the Royal Society. This session is part of the “Meet the Scientists” series and will also be livestreamed on the Royal Society’s YouTube channel.
The talk is free to attend, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition is a free, week-long celebration of scientific discovery, featuring hands-on activities, talks, and demonstrations from researchers across the UK.
Plan your visit and meet our HAPPYMAT team.
