ENGINEERING & PHYSICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH COUNCIL: Want to be a NOISEmaker? 8 June 2009
gain media training and help to promote the profile of science and engineering
Do you have what it takes? The search is on for volunteers to become part of an exciting, national campaign to raise awareness of science and engineering.
NOISE (New Outlooks In Science & Engineering) is a UK-wide campaign funded by the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). By providing media and public engagement training, we aim to provide early-career researchers with the tools to communicate the importance and relevance of their research to a wide public audience.
NOISEmakers are early career scientists and engineers who are actively engaged in their disciplines. NOISE provides a range of opportunities:
• Media - interviews on the radio, TV and in print
• Website - personal profiles, articles and blogs
• Events - talks and demonstrations (for example, at the British Science Festival and Cheltenham Science Festival)
• Training - for media interviews, TV appearances, delivering presentations and more
You don't have to be a media expert. We can help you with all that; but you do need to have an articulate enthusiasm for your subject.
We cover expenses and pay a modest sum when NOISEmakers give us their time, such as when they attend events. However, we hope the main reward is the knowledge and skills NOISEmakers gain from their experiences with the campaign, and the drive to put these skills to use engaging the public with STEM research.
We are looking for people who are:
• Early career research engineers, physical scientists and mathematicians
• Passionate about science, engineering or maths and enthusiastic about communicating your subject to the general public
• Good communicators and happy to work with the media
• Keen to develop public engagement and communication skills
• Up for a challenge!
We especially want to hear from you if you specialise in:
- Computer science
- Chemistry
- Environmental Engineering
- Mathematics
