AB - We describe the use of saturable gain media as the basis for adaptive holography for exciting new devices for measurement and laser control. Specifically, we detail the formation of a gain grating acting as an adaptive beam combiner for high sensitivity interferometry with speckle-beams. This addresses a novel solution for on-line diagnostics and information transfer in hostile environments where speckle presents a fundamental limitation. Our interferometer provides capability for industrial non-destructive testing by remote laser detection of ultrasonic vibration of rough surfaces, but also has application in medical diagnostics with diffuse reflection from human tissue and free-space optical communications and environmental monitoring where atmospheric turbulence is the major problem.
