Overview

We are interested in developing new solutions for controlling root growth in vertical farming and space farming environments, based on our fundamental understanding of root growth and root system architecture requirements. In collaboration with Dr Connor Myant a and Dr Ali Mohammed  we design and 3D-print patterned hydrogel substrates optimised for root growth and control.

Main Questions

  • Can 3D hydrogel substrates be designed to simulate real soil geometrical and topological characteristics?
  • Can patterned hydrogels be used to control root growth in low gravity (e.g. LEO, Moon, Mars) or in odd spatial configurations (e.g. vertical farming, green walls)?
