Imperial’s Research Support and Compliance Division provides a central portal for support, information and guidance for our external research funders and internal research and support service communities. We exist to provide expert guidance and services in support of Imperial's externally funded research portfolio. Our primary purpose is to champion professional standards and consistency in research administration across Imperial to ensure that institutional governance responsibilities and obligations are met. We add value as a support service through the provision of specialist advice, development of systems and training, and targeted information and governance policies.

The Research Support and Compliance Division is led by Ben Hughes (Interim Director) and is managed through the following functional areas:

Research Governance and Integrity

Responsible for helping Imperial and its researchers meet the requirements of research governance, and ensuring it fulfils it's legal, ethical and scientific obligations of the healthcare research process.

Research Systems and Information

Responsible for the support, administration and development of research systems and provision of strategic and operational management information.

Research Security and Contracts

Responsible for strategy, policy, governance and assurance for research security. Expertise and advice on research security issues including compliance with export legislation.

Responsible for policy and governance of research and related contracts, providing specialist advice, as well as the negotiation of EU contracts and incoming Material Transfer Agreements to Imperial.

Research Support and Assurance

Responsible for the formulation, implementation and regular review of policies and procedures which underpin professional standards and consistency in research funding administration and management. This also includes assessment of the College’s overall performance in research funding management to provide assurance that it is meeting funder requirements, and coordination of funder audits at institutional level.

Open Access and Research Data

Research Support and Compliance Division is the institutional champion for Open Access and Research Data Management. We develop strategies to ensure that Imperial meets funder and regulatory requirements. We work with partners across (and beyond) Imperial, including the Library and ICT, so that Imperial’s digital infrastructure facilitates the highest standards of research communication. 

Research Services

Faculty Research Services teams provide local support to academic departments. Organisationally, they sit within and report to each Faculty. These teams deliver the operational and transactional activities that support management of the externally funded research portfolio. Research Support and Compliance Division provides the policy and system frameworks within which the Faculty Research Services teams operate.
