The Race Equity Working Group is part of the School of Public Health People & Culture Committee. Our purpose is to improve the promotion and progression opportunities for minority ethnic staff and to increase recruitment and retention of minority ethnic students. This is to self-reflect on institutional and cultural barriers faced by members of these communities.

Current priorities

  1. Collecting data on the numbers of minority ethnic staff and students in SPH;
  2. Implementing strategies to address progression, promotion recruitment and retention of minority ethnic staff and students in SPH, including positive actions to address the particular underrepresentation of Black staff and students;
  3. Hosting activities and events to promote equity, diversity and inclusion, for example to celebrate Race Equality Week, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, or Black History Month.

The group is co-led by Jenny Husbands (representing Research and Teaching and Learning staff) and involves Dr Fred Piel (representing Academics), Pushpa Hossain, Sapna Halder and Zeinab Mulla (representing Post Graduate Research, Professional and Technical and Operational staff and Teaching and Learning respectively).

We work closely with colleagues across the School and with the University Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and REC Self-Assessment Team (SAT) Committees to ensure that our actions are equitable, inclusive, effective and informed by diverse staff and students’ feedback.
