Motivations and Frustrations

Motivations

David comes from a small town and he, and his family, are really proud that he got into Imperial. He’s excited to be in London and hoping to make the most of everything Imperial has to offer him. One of the reasons he likes studying business is because he enjoys problem solving and meeting new people. He thinks the mix of topics in the Imperial BSc will allow him to move into a business related field but has other elements that will help him to better understand aspects of the economy, especially data science which he particularly enjoys. He is a massive Taylor Swift fan but he is also intrigued how she, and other pop stars use data to further their growth.  He is interested in how he might be able to combine his interest in business with his interest in data and music but is not quite sure what that looks like yet.

Frustrations

While David did very well at his school, he is now studying with a much larger group of students who have all sorts of different backgrounds he now worries that he’s not good enough as many of his fellow students seem very confident. He’s finding it difficult not being the top of the class anymore and he’s also finding London quite big, busy and a little overwhelming at times. He’s worried that his family won’t understand or won’t feel as proud of him if he tells him how he’s feeling. Some of his fellow students have already had business related experiences during school as their families have connections in industry. He is finding it frustrating trying understand how he can find similar sorts of experiences as his family don’t have any connections.

Work experience

David is in his second year and he is looking for an internship for the summer. He is worried as some of his fellow students already have work experience arranged over summer through their family connections, so he has decided to be proactive.
