Motivations and Frustrations

Motivations

After graduation, Chris was unsuccessful in securing a place on a Graduate Scheme in a large organisation and took a year out, which included some temporary work in the NHS. She enjoyed the environment and would like a master’s so she can have a wider range of opportunities in this area. From her undergraduate degree she knows she is interested in this topic and is excited to get more specialised knowledge from this MSc programme.

Frustrations

Being unsuccessful on the graduate scheme has made her lose confidence in her ability to apply to similar opportunities in the future. She also has a range of other commitment and is worried that she will not have time to make good applications. She is also worried that employers will see her year out as a wasted year.

Chris's AA

Chris uses Attributes and Aspirations for Medicine the sections in bold refer to the units she takes.

Chris is doing group work as part of her course and WWO1 for MED – Working in a Team helps to explore group dynamics and how different skills and personality traits make a difference. Chris completes an online test to find out what her idea role is within a group, then reflects on that when selecting group roles.

She then decides to explore the career skills modules within AA and in CVA1 for MED – Introduction to Recruitment Chris explores eligibility for different graduate training programs. She ends up enrolling on one of these schemes and moves to Leeds. Part of her role means some travelling and EE5 for MED – Practical Tools explores how OneNote can be used to take notes and work while travelling. In EE3 for MED – Organisation and Prioritisation Chris’s sister become ill and she has to adapt her schedule in order to spend more time with her family. This unit uses methods of prioritisation to help her make the most of her time.
