Motivations and Frustrations

Motivations

Sarah’s grandfather was Jamaican and came to the UK in the 1950s to work and since then her family have all gone to university and so she didn’t really consider not staying in education. Many of her friends also came to London universities which is part of the reason she chose Imperial. She’s always loves maths but wanted a practical application which the joint maths and computing programme is giving her. Sarah is quite competitive and always wants to get the best marks she can, along with trying to win any swimming competition she takes part in. She’s not 100% sure what she wants to do after university but has recently found out about cryptography and is interested to learn more about this.

Frustrations

Sarah is finding her course very busy, and she has a lot of time in lectures. This makes it difficult to find time for the swimming training she really enjoys. While living in halls is useful as it’s close to university, she also finds it difficult to concentrate as other students aren’t always considerate. She would like to get a part-time job to help top up her rent for next year but isn’t sure where she’ll fit that in with her busy schedule. She’s finding London quite expensive which means she isn’t able to catch up with her friends as much either. She is also a staunch Aston Villa supporter which she inherited from her grandfather and finds it hard to find people to watch games with.
