My Role Models
Personal Role Model - Dr Joanna Atkinson
Dr Joanna Atkinson is a deaf-blind neuropsychologist who had a lasting impact on me early in my career. We worked together on a project exploring executive functioning in deaf, signing older adults. Through this, she introduced me to the world of deaf bingo and residential holidays for the retired deaf community, these experiences taught me more than just psychology. As a practitioner-academic, she has championed many other deaf researchers and trainee clinical psychologists, emphasizing the importance of supporting your community and bringing others along on the journey. Although I eventually moved away from the field, I’m deeply grateful for the insight I gained. The research skills and analytical thinking I developed during that time still shape my work today.

Academic Role Model - Stuart Hall
I studied BA Political Science and History but grew up surrounded by the writings of Stuart Hall, the Jamaican British academic, cultural theorist and activist. Hall’s work bridging academic theory and activist practice had a profound influence on my own journey—from academia into educational practice focused on equity and social justice. Though not typically associated with STEMM, Hall’s legacy is vital to the academic community, including at Imperial. His critical analysis of race, identity and migration, as well as his role in breaking barriers as a Black scholar, continues to shape and permeates how we think about inclusion and structural change across all disciplines.
