About Me
My name is Jarod. I am from Dubai and I am doing an MSc in Environmental Engineering. I’m hoping to get experience in the UK before moving home to implement environmental engineering solutions in the Middle East.
Jarod is part of the Imperial Inclusive Personae project, these are not real students but are designed to represent the diverse nature of the Imperial community.
My Role Model - Imhotep
Coming from an Arabic speaking country and studying at an International University for my undergraduate (Birla is an Indian university with a campus in Dubai) I have thought a lot about cultural differences since I came to the UK.
UK universities have a very Western history, which is understandable but for this reason I would like to share the story of Imhotep. An Ancient Egyptian polymath, often credited as the first civil engineer, but was also a doctor and a statesman. He is thought to be the architect behind the Step Pyramid of Djoser which is still standing. This is an immense achievement and something that should be celebrated by engineers across the world. Greek engineers and philosophers made some significant innovations but often others had done similar things before or simultaneously in other civilisations and cultures. I think exploring this and other methods will make us all stronger as engineers and people.
