My Role Model - Maria Skłodowska-Curie
Maria Skłodowska-Curie, the first woman to receive a Nobel prize, and the only woman with two. Many think she was French because of her husband's name, but she was born in Poland. She had to leave Poland as she wasn't given opportunity to work in science because of her gender. She worked incredibly hard and didn’t give up and was finally offered a place in Sorbonne in Paris. She partnered with her husband so that their research could be published, which is a great example of collaboration in the face of adversity. As a woman scientist at the beginning of 20th century, she still wasn't taken seriously. She discovered two new elements and made a significant contribution to research on radiation, which is used to this day in X-ray and curing cancer.
