About Me

A PhD scientist who has been an academic and an industry scientist.  I love working at the interface between basic science and translational research.

My Role Model - Gerturde Elion

Gertrude Elion changed the way drugs are discovered and developed, by building precise scientific frameworks rather than using a trial-and-error approach.  She personally created pharmaceuticals that cure childhood leukaemia, treat malaria and fight viruses.  But even more than that, she changed a whole industry, with knock-on effects for tens of millions of people. The systems she pioneered, and the people she trained, were instrumental in creating the drugs that saved millions of lives in the HIV epidemic.  Gertrude was the only woman in her university chemistry class and was told it wasn't a suitable career path for a woman. I wonder if she thought about that when she received the Nobel Prize?
