Transport

The group has a great deal of experience in working with the transport industry - particularly aerospace where the safe running of aeroplanes and engines is critical. A large field of interest is in the inspection of engine components, and we have a variety of projects with Rolls-Royce on improved inspection of engine components. We also work closely on inspection and sensing techniques for the Vehicle Futures Hub.

Ultrasound is widely employed in medical diagnostics because it is real-time, safe and relatively inexpensive. The group develops imaging, characterisation and modelling techniques for ultrasound for applications including cancer diagnosis in liver and the skin, as well as monitoring wound healing. The group collaborates with experts at the ICR and across Imperial.

Infrastructure

We have extensive interests in the inspection and health monitoring infrastructure of infrastructure. Our long range guided wave technology is specifically aimed at the inspection of large structures and has found wide application. Many industrial members of RCNDE, particularly in the oil and gas, power and nuclear sectors are interested in ensuring the integrity of large structures over extended periods and we expect activity in this area to increase.
