An empty lecture theatre at the Sir Michael Uren Building at White City

We maintain extensive building and space information in order to support the planning, design and construction of our campuses.

Our space database, Pythagoras, allows staff to view and filter space to a wide range of detail and scope.

Once you've viewed Pythagoras, if you then need to request, release or modify space, you should submit a Space Change Form on our main Request and Report portal.

Building Information

If you are involved (or are tendering to be involved) with a Property project or change at Imperial, it's important that you're aware of our Building Information processes. The Building Information process feeds into the overall Property project processes and can be found on our Contractor Portal.

Anyone that amends, creates or receives any building change is responsible for issuing the relevant changes to our team so that Pythagoras can be updated.

Building Information Modelling (BIM)

We use the Building Information Modelling (BIM) process to create and manage digital information through the lifetime of a building. BIM supports projects from concept through design, construction and into operation, ensuring data continuity. To do this we manage and develop a set of Exchange Information Requirements (EIR) which clearly define project information needs, standards, responsibilities, and formats. This ensures project teams deliver high-quality digital assets which allow for better coordination and asset management. Using BIM to manage our buildings will develop our digital twins for future planning and maintenance.

Exchange Information Requirements (EIR) document

The Exchange Information Requirements (EIR) document forms part of the tender information pack and is specifically developed for each project or change (regardless of if the deliverable is 3D or 2D). It will be included within the contractual works information.

The purpose of this document is to set out the key project information deliverables as well as managerial, technical and commercial requirements that must be met throughout the project lifecycle. It provides governance relating to information exchange and aligns, where relevant, to the minimum standards of the UK BIM Framework in accordance with the UK BIM Alliance.

Building Information FAQs

EIR standards
Our EIRs detail what information is needed and why, including (but not limited to) model development, drawings, assets, reports and how information should be developed and delivered. It covers technical (software, formats, standards), management (roles, processes, security), and commercial (deliverables, timing, purpose) aspects to guide the project team and supplier responses.
Imperial has 3 EIR options to guide the requirements of change. You can view an example 2D EIR document via Box; this is the minimum delivery requirement if no project-specific EIR has been provided. However, a project-specific EIR will take precedence and should be issued for all projects or changes.
Room/level naming and numbering

All room naming, numbering and level naming will be allocated by Imperial.

Requests for room numbering and naming should be made at RIBA Stage 3 on a project and should be accompanied with a full set of general arrangement drawings. If there are further changes that may affect previously allocated names and numberings after this stage, these must be discussed and reallocated by Imperial accordingly.
