The Certificate in Medical Leadership

Aspiring Board members in health care have valuable expertise and are keen to contribute to their organisation’s success. This Programme aims to help them maximise their potential.

Imperial College Healthcare Trust recognised that it had a group of such senior staff and asked us to build their understanding of the overall strategic and operational issues faced by their trust, and to develop their skills so that they can contribute fully.

Together with the executives of the Trust we developed a bespoke 20-month programme. Consisting of 11 classroom days, five project days and a final day of presentations, each day is ‘owned’ by an executive director of the Trust, who designs it in collaboration with specialist members of the Business School and invites expert external speakers to deliver part of the day.

The days cover the health economy, leadership, finance, strategy, operations, governance and risk, change management, media relations and customer service.

Building upon these days, the project allows participants to apply their learning in practice. In small groups they take a key challenge for the Trust, seek evidence, examine it, try potential solutions, and finally present the project and proposed solution – which must be of publishable quality – to the Board.

Not only has the Trust benefited from a much enlarged pool of senior leaders with well-developed skills, but the participants have also been motivated by the programme and have become far more confident about their ability to lead innovation and good practice across the Trust.
