The support we provide

We provide a lot of support in-house, at no extra cost to the student.  To access this support, students are encouraged to engage with the Disability Advisory Service.

Listed below are some of our most common adjustments and support.  This list isn’t exhaustive; therefore, if you need further information to complete your report, please contact the Disability Advisory Service.

Lecture accessibility and support

  • While we use Panopto and most lectures are recorded and uploaded, recordings cannot be guaranteed for every session. The recording will have captions and transcripts.
  • Supporting materials for lectures are uploaded in advance to the relevant Virtual Learning Environment wherever possible.
  • Some lecture theatres and Rooms may be changed to accommodate accessibility requirements, such as the need for step-free access and induction loops.

Assistive technology software

We can offer software to support students with their studies.  This need will be discussed with students.

Laptop contribution of £200

Imperial students can apply for assistance with the £200 DSA laptop contribution through the Student Support Fund, which considers applications for students who face unexpected financial hardship.  However, please note that the Disability Advisory Service does not have a specific fund to cover or contribute toward DSA laptop costs directly, nor are we involved in the eligibility process.

Further information can be found on the Student Support Fund page.

Library support

  • RNIB book share
  • Laptop and iPad loan service, which might be helpful while the student waits for DSAs
  • Book fetching
  • Extended library loans
  • Quiet study space - Assistive technology room (South Kensington campus only)

Equipment loans

While students are waiting for their DSA funding, we have some equipment (subject to availability) for short-term loans.

Students should contact the Disability Advisory Service to discuss what is available.

Accommodation (Halls)

If a student has specific accommodation requirements, they should be directed to contact the Disability Advisory Service. We can support applications for students who wish to continue in campus accommodation after their first year due to medical or wellbeing needs. Applications usually open in December and close in February for the following academic year.

Additionally, we can support students who may require en-suite accommodation for medical reasons, including assistance with any associated cost differences.

Additional printing, scanning, and photocopying

Students should speak to a disability advisor regarding any additional costs for printing, scanning, or photocopying. If deemed reasonable, these costs can be included in the student’s support plan.
