Independent Study Option
Module aims
In this project-based module you will have the opportunity to conduct independent research into an advanced computer science topic that has been agreed by a supervisor approved by the Department of Computing. You will present your research outcomes verbally and in writing. The ISO will be of particular value if you are considering the possibility of completing a PhD, or following a career in industrial research. Potentially ISO work can be continued and expanded in the individual project.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
- Conduct a scientific literature survey
- Conduct an independent investigation and apply cutting-edge research, methods and thinking appropriate to the problem
- Devise and conduct experiments to validate scientific hypotheses and/or implement advanced computing techniques.
- Exercise scientific writing skills by way of a substantial written report, summarising your findings
- Present complex technical material orally to a mixed audience
Module syllabus
You will study your agreed topic through a literature search and experimentation designed by you in discussion with your supervisor.
Teaching methods
The ISO is individual and you will discuss the best approach to conduct your ISO directly with an academic supervisor. They will agree a plan for the technical content with you, and hold periodic meetings to discuss your progress. A typical ISO will contain a major element of reading. This will primarily be in the form of research papers that you identify, but occasionally other sources may be useful, such as material in advanced textbooks. There is also expected to be a practical element of analytical research. In most cases, this takes the form of experimentation and implementation, but occasionally this may involve techniques such as theoretical or conceptual analysis.
Assessments
Your progress will be monitored in the regular one-to-one meetings through discussing and agreeing goals. Summative assessment is carried out by an independent team at the end of the project, with input from the supervisor.
You will produce a short, well-focused written report (20-30 pages). You will also be required to give an oral presentation and engage in discussion with the marking team to help them to evaluate your work. You need to pass both the report and presentation components separately to successfully complete the ISO.
Verbal feedback is provided regularly throughout the ISO at supervision meetings. You are also encouraged to submit a draft of your ISO report to your supervisor in advance of the deadline for written formative feedback.
