SUPPORTED SERVICES

MANAGED LINUX INSTALLATIONS

CSG provide and support a managed Linux distribution suitable for use on both desktops and servers, deployed on all undergraduate lab machines and available as an option on CSG-provided machines for staff and PhD students.

The current supported DoC Linux distribution is a locally customized version of Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble Numbat) released in April 2024. Older supported and deployed distributions include a customised version of Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy Jellyfish).

We expect the next build to be a managed Ubuntu 26.04 Linux distribution some time after its planned release in April 2026

REMOTE LOGIN

Secure shell ('ssh') is a network protocol allowing secure, remote machine access. 'ssh' also refers to applications that allow you to connect using this network protocol. In order to connect, the remote machine (the server or DoC machine) must be running a secure shell daemon/server; Linux and OS X Macintosh devices can readily do so while Windows machines require a third-party application (eg. puTTY).

The local machine (the client or your home machine) must be running a secure shell client; ssh client implementations are freely available for all major platforms (please see below).

You can ssh to the following five DoC Linux servers from off-site (that is, outside the college network):

  • shell1.doc.ic.ac.uk

  • shell2.doc.ic.ac.uk

  • shell3.doc.ic.ac.uk

  • shell4.doc.ic.ac.uk

  • shell5.doc.ic.ac.uk

Read the complete SSH guide for more information on how to connect
