What is Formula Student?

Team Introduction
Imperial Formula Racing is a flagship interdisciplinary teaching endeavour of Imperial College London, approaching our 25th year. It involves students designing, manufacturing testing and racing a high-performance vehicle. In doing so, engineers get involved in designing every aspect of an Internal Combustion vehicle whilst also developing teamwork and project management skills, at the core of achieving such a project every year. The team is made up of both project students and volunteers from different departments, making this a truly interdisciplinary effort from across the College.
Imperial Formula Racing has 3 aims:
- Deliver vehicles with competition and event winning potential.
- Develop cutting edge technology of international standard with far reaching impact.
- Inspire and train the next generation of engineers to be leaders and innovators in the technologies that are relevant for our future.
We compete yearly in the Formula Student UK competition, taking place at Silverstone Circuit in July.
What is Formula Student UK?
Formula Student is an international engineering competition where university students design, build, and race formula-style race cars to compete in the summer at Silverstone, organised by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.
Student teams are tasked with designing and constructing a single-seat race car prototype within specific regulations. These regulations typically cover safety, performance, and engineering design. Once built, the teams compete against each other in various dynamic and static events, including acceleration, skid pad and endurance.
The competition not only tests the technical skills of the students in designing and manufacturing but also emphasises other important aspects such as project management, budgeting, teamwork, and presentation skills. It provides students with a valuable hands-on experience that bridges the gap between academic knowledge and real-world engineering practice, often serving as a springboard for careers in the automotive and motorsport industries.
