Synopsis

Malaria cases caused by Plasmodium knowlesi, a simian parasite naturally found in long-tailed and pig-tailed macaques, are rapidly increasing in Sabah, Malaysia. This seminar will give a brief overview of malaria in Malaysia and the problems faced when controlling simian malarias. Results will be presented on how mosquito communities differ from ground to canopy level and across different forest disturbance gradients in Malaysia. 

 

Biography

Hayley is a PhD student based at the Centre for Environmental Policy (CEP) at Imperial College London. Her research focuses on how land use change affects mosquito abundance and community composition in Sabah, Malaysia. She has spent 15 months of her PhD living in a tropical rainforest to collect mosquito specimens. Hayley holds an MSc in Entomology from Imperial College London, and a BSc from the University of Reading. Hayley’s research is funded by Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).
