Abstract

SoCs have transformed the semiconductor and electronics industries, integrating staggering breadth of functionality and performance into highly cost-effective, low power but complex single-chip solution platforms. However, there has been another transformation: many of the major functional blocks on today’s SoCs are provided by Silicon IP providers rather than designed in-house.

Tony will review some of the important technological and market trends in key segments and discuss how Imagination Technologies is helping to create the ability to translate vision into reality , and to constantly enhance it.

He will touch on key functional blocks in modern SoCs explaining how the GPU is becoming the new driving force not only for modern applications but also for design methodologies and process technologies, and how heterogeneous processing is transforming the way SoCs handle key user applications across multimedia, processor, communications, cloud and more.

Biography

Tony gained his B.Eng (1st class Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Melbourne, Australia, in 1979.

He joined the Space Division of British Aerospace, where he was involved in the design and implementation of communications and control systems, and some of the first LSI devices used in space. He became one of the youngest ever managers at BAE, running their serial bus and embedded OS activities for spacecraft.

He then joined Inmos, leading their DSP chipset and Transputer systems engineering activities. After being co-founder and CTO of a workstation-based parallel processor startup, he then moved to LSI Logic where he was Technical Director for their mixed signal ASIC division, later becoming LSI’s European Strategic Marketing Director. He then moved to Hitachi (later Renesas) and later Panasonic, in both cases holding senior engineering management roles in their semiconductor design and business development operations.

Joining the Technology division of Imagination Technologies in 2006, Tony manages all aspects of technology and corporate marketing, as well as all marketing communications, strategic partnerships and ecosystems. He was appointed Executive Vice President Marketing in February 2013, and is a member of Imagination’s Executive Management Board.
