Abstract

Crossrail is currently the largest infrastructure project in Europe. The new west- east railway runs 118 km from Maidenhead and Heathrow airport, in the west, through 21 km of new twin bore tunnels under the heart of London and on to Canary Wharf, Woolwich, Abbey Wood and Shenfield, to the east of the city.

When Crossrail opens it will increase London’s public rail transport capacity by 10%, supporting regeneration across the capital helping to secure London’s position as a world leading financial center. Construction of the bored tunnels has reached the halfway-point, with some significant successes in the completion of underground construction.

The presentation will highlight achievements to date, the challenges in design, procurement and construction, and plans for completing the railway and bringing it into use.
