Science of Digestion: Guts UK and Imperial BRC

Organised by Guts UK and NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre, MDR researchers led a public engagement session at Ealing Town Hall around the importance of gut health.

With many of the public suffering, or even dying, because of a lack of knowledge about our guts, this event aimed to ensure that the public better understands digestive disorders, their potential treatment and the support on offer.

Public and patient involvement is a key tool in helping end the pain and suffering for the millions affected by digestive diseases.

The team of speakers from MDR included Prof Maud Lemoine (Head of Hepatology & Gastroenterology), Dr Nick Powell (Clinical Reader in Gastroenterology), Prof Garry Frost (Head of Nutrition Research) and Prof Julian Marchesi (Professor of Digestive Health).

At the event, a number of important topics were presented and there was also a lively Q&A with the public. Topics included:

  • Liver- “500 functions of the liver”
  • Microbiome - "Your gut microbes: not bad, just misunderstood"
  • Crohn’s Disease - “IBD – Where have we come from and where are we going?”
  • Diet - “Diet and your Colon: What’s Important?”
