Background

Medical and health professionals in academia have a vital role in preparing the next generation of medical and other health professionals to deliver high quality health and healthcare services. They also play a major role in shaping the quality of services provided.

With the global rapid progression in medical technology and research, it is a challenge for health professionals, schools and colleges to ensure that all their academic staff and other health professionals are up-to-speed with the latest advancements, and today’s organic curricula. Highly performing medical and health institutions are investing huge amount of resources in advancing the teaching, research skills and experience of their academic staff at all levels. As such, and at the request of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific research (MOHHSR) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) Iraq, Imperial College London and its WHO Collaborating Centre for Public Health Education and Training (ICL-WHO CC) have organized a two week bespoke short training course; tailored to develop and build the capacity of a cohort of Iraqi health professionals in Health & Medical Research. More explicitly, the goals of the short course are:

1. Provide an opportunity for participants to develop their research skills and capabilities; including writing and disseminating high-quality research.
2. Enable the participants to improve their aptitude in teaching, training, and other educational roles (both at undergraduate and postgraduate level); including research methodology to the highest standards.
3. Advance the participants’ leadership role in medical education; including modern management in medical schools, governance and stewardship.

Learning objectives

The programme aims to achieve the following learning objectives, where the participants will be able to:

• Describe the stages involved in developing and completing a research project successfully, and describe the purpose and content of a research protocol/proposal.
• Critically evaluate research papers so they can assess the value of the available evidence, and ensure it is incorporated into practice
• Apply an evidence-based approach to the selection of outcome measures which are robust and practical.
• Become well versed with modern medical undergraduate teaching and assessment; including problem based learning which are student-centred in class, community and clinical settings
• Be able to write a research proposal / protocol; submit proposals for funding; conduct a research programme; writing a report / paper for publications; and disseminate the findings
• Become fully aware of ethical issues in research, and its regulations, for research ethical committee.
• Be well versed with research governance and clinical governance.
• Develop their leadership role in medical education and learn about modern management in medical schools; including, governance and stewardship
