Embedding Sustainable Initiatives in Everything We Do
Within the Chemistry Department, sustainability isn’t an add‑on - it’s at the core of our culture, our science, and our daily practice.
We are proud to participate in a range of sector‑leading sustainability programmes:
✔ LEAF (Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework)
These initiatives help us continuously improve our environmental performance, reduce waste, and promote responsible laboratory practices.
Small Change, Big Impact!
Our Efforts Have Paid Off! Thanks to the commitment of everyone in the Chemistry Department, we’ve achieved a 6% reduction in power usage across 2024–2025 compared to 2023–2024.
This is a fantastic achievement, and it comes from lots of small, consistent actions such as:
- Lowering fume hood sashes when not in use
- Identifying equipment that can be safely turned off when not in use
- Building awareness of energy‑saving practices across our labs and offices
- And many more everyday sustainable choices!
Celebrating Our Sustainability Funding Success
We are especially proud of the grants we have secured to support our green initiatives, including:
💚 Imperial Lab Kit Sustainability Fund
💚 Royal Society of Chemistry Sustainability Grant
These grants allow us to develop innovative, impactful projects that make our labs greener and our research more sustainable.
Lab Kit fund Success!
The Centre of Chemistry Education received funding to purchase air-cooled condensers for their undergraduate chemistry teaching labs, saving an estimated 80,000 L of water a year!
What’s Next?
We’re now turning our attention to water-saving initiatives across the department.
Watch this space for upcoming updates, tips, and new opportunities to get involved as we continue to make our work greener and more efficient.
