a) Are any special skills required to be able to work as Research Fellow compared to being a postdoc?
The main differences between being a fellow compared to being a postdoc is that you have to have your own research vision and manage a team to deliver it. People, including your postdocs and students, are trusting that your ideas are worth investigating which can take some getting used to. Managing each member of your team in the way that gets the most out of them is also a skill of itself that takes active work to develop.
b) What has surprised you most about the fellowship experience?
I have been surprised by how in touch with research I still feel. Everyone told me that the admin would take me away from the part of the job I loved, but now instead of just seeing the results of my work I get to see the results of a whole team. What we can do together has exceeded my expectations and I’m really proud of all my postdocs and students.
