Application Process
All applicants should make sure they read our competency standards for Physics.
Entry Requirements
Qualifications
Our minimum entry standard for A-Level applicants is an A* in Mathematics, A* in Physics, and an A in one other subject (excluding General Studies or Critical Thinking). Whilst we recommend that applicants take Further Maths at A-Level, it is not a requirement as we are aware it is not offered at all schools.
Physics will consider applicants who need to retake an A-Level. If this was due to extenuating circumstances, please ask your school to comment on this in their reference.
Our minimum entry standard for IB applicants is 40 points overall with a 7 in Mathematics, 7 in Physics, and 6 in a third subject all at higher level.
Please visit our course study webpages (links provided above) to check entry requirements for all other qualifications.
For applicants to the F309 MSci Physics with a Year Abroad degree, applicants will need a grade B/6 at GCSE, or equivalent, in a relevant modern foreign language (French, German, Italian, or Spanish). Fluent speakers of these languages are exempt from this requirement, but will need to complete a language assessment at the start of their degree to confirm their exemption. If you are interested in doing an English language exchange in Year 3 you are required to apply for the F303 MSci Physics degree. The selection process will happen in Year 2 Term 2 with successful students transferred to the F309 degree at that point.
English Language Requirement
All applicants, including native speakers, need to meet our English language requirements. For a list of qualifications we accept, please visit Imperial's English language requirements webpage. Physics requires the higher standard. Applicants who already have English language test results are encouraged to submit these with their application.
Admissions Test (ESAT)
All applicants must take the Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) and complete the Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, and Physics sections. Please note that the test requires registration in advance. The results of the test will be used along with all other application information in a holistic review to inform the selection for offers made. For full details including the test dates, see the link above. Physics considers applicants who take the test in either the October or January sittings.
Interviews
Physics does not usually conduct interviews as part of the admissions process.
Decisions
All decisions will be communicated to applicants by the end of March. No offers will be made before the ESAT.
ATAS
Most international applicants for one of our MSci degrees (F303, F309, F390) will require ATAS clearance before applying for their visa. The ATAS clearance will be specified as a condition of their offer from Imperial.
We recommend applicants apply for the ATAS clearance as soon as they have made Imperial either their Firm or Insurance choice with UCAS and by May at the very latest.
The International Student Support Office has more information on how to complete the ATAS application.
