Following a major digital transformation, IGHI has launched a revitalised suite of online master's programmes that are open for applications.

Designed to nurture the next generation of healthcare leaders, the Institute of Global Health Innovation's Health Policy and Patient Safety MSc Programmes are recruiting UK and international applicants who are seeking to contribute to better and safer healthcare systems and advance their careers in healthcare.

Harnessing the benefits of online, anytime-anyplace access, the digitisation and optimisation of these courses enables a more flexible learning approach for students while maintaining world-class teaching excellence. Students will learn with world-leading experts in the field and develop the knowledge and skills to elicit change in the health system and beyond.

"We’ve listened and learned and are proud to be re-launching these programmes to give students the best learning experience possible." Prof Ara Darzi Institute of Global Health Innovation

From Autumn 2022, the MSc Health Policy Programme will be delivered through a blend of online and face-to-face teaching, while the MSc Patient Safety Programme will be a fully online course. This means students can study at their own pace while managing other commitments such as full-time work. Students will benefit from an engaging and varied mix of pre-recorded lectures, live group sessions, online activities and regular discussion forums to exchange ideas with their peers.

Professor Ara Darzi, co-director of the Institute of Global Health Innovation, said: “Through this major overhaul, we’re opening our doors to many more people who want to help bring transformational improvements in healthcare, and ensuring that our educational offerings are tailored to what students need and want.

“We’ve listened and learned and are proud to be re-launching these programmes to give students the best learning experience possible, and we look forward to welcoming a new cohort of change-makers in the coming academic year.”

IGHI’s education offerings

The MSc Patient Safety and MSc Health Policy are part of IGHI’s growing educational offering, which also includes master’s degrees in Healthcare and Design and Medical Robotics and Image-guided Intervention. IGHI is also part of a consortium that delivers the NHS Digital Academy’s flagship programme in Digital Health Leadership, which trains and empowers health and care leaders to drive digital transformation in the NHS. Together, these courses are equipping the leaders of tomorrow with the knowledge and skills to bring better, safer, more sustainable healthcare.

"I thoroughly enjoyed the critical publication appraisal skills session, which I can apply in the workplace." Silvia Davey MSc Health Policy student

Through the MSc Health Policy, students will develop the ability to critique health policy with evidence-based approaches and build essential research skills to carry out original studies. The detailed theoretical and practical understanding of health policy that students develop from this course enables them to improve policy quality in their work context and beyond. In addition, there are excellent opportunities for networking with peers and leading voices in the field.

Current student, Silvia Davey, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the critical publication appraisal skills session, which I can apply in the workplace when using published research in my policy-making. The group-working experience has enabled me to make connections with people I might work with in the future.”

"The course brings lots of opportunities to engage with and learn from a variety of people working in the field." Charlotte Parsley MSc Patient Safety student

The MSc Patient Safety is delivered with continued collaboration between IGHI and Bayer’s Pharmacovigilance department. The ongoing partnership aspires to support the education of future patient safety experts. The refreshed course content features best-practice frameworks from healthcare systems around the world, as well as real-world insights and industry case studies. Students will also develop practical tools that they can apply in addressing patient safety challenges.

Charlotte Parsley, MSc Patient Safety student, said: “The course brings lots of opportunities to engage with and learn from a variety of people working in the field. For example, we had a Q&A session with a panel of experts in patient safety who shared their insights on large-scale medical failures. You cannot miss this wonderful experience!”
