A half day of presentations and lively discussions took place on 24 October as part of the data science theme industry showcase.
Hosted by the FoNS Data Science theme and Imperial-X (I-X), the event brought together a diverse range of industry contacts and cross-College group of researchers, including Ioanna Papatsouma, Elizaveta Semenova and Steven Bennett, the FoNS Data Science Ambassadors, who said:
"We thought this event would be of interest to everybody at Imperial including early career researchers (advanced ECRs, Postdocs, Fellows and PhD students) wanting to know how data science tools can assist them in their own research, and who are interested in connecting people from a diverse range of industries."
After welcome messages and introductory remarks from Professors Sophia Yaliraki and Guy Nason (FoNS Data Science Theme Champions), the event started with a session of short talks from industry, including: Dr Jeremiah Hayes (Accenture), Dr Francesca Vianello (Exscientia), Dr Mattia Fiorentini (Quantinuum), Thomas Makkink (InstaDeep), Alexandros Vamvakaris-Skrivanos (Product Madness) and Dr Sophie Finnigan (Faculty).
Professor Eric Yeatman (Chair of the Board and Co-director of I-X) gave an overview of I-X initiative and chaired the second session with presentations from Imperial academic staff Dr Anastasia Boryvkh (Lecturer at the Department of Mathematics and I-X initiative), Dr Cristopher Salvi (Lecturer at the Department of Mathematics and I-X initiative), Dr Barbara Bravi (Lecturer in Biomathematics at the Department of Mathematics) and Dr Mark Kennedy (Associate Professor at the Business School and Co-Director of the Data Science).
"The talks were absolutely fascinating. It was also great to showcase I-X. I thought the mix between FoNS Data Science and I-X was natural and constructive", said Professor Guy Nason, FoNS Data Science Theme Champion.
Further discussion with the audience took place during a question and answer session led by the Ambassadors, with a panel consisting of all the event's speakers.
The event ended with a drinks and canapes reception allowing all participants to interact more and discuss future activities and collaborations.
