Imperial College London has been selected as one of nine UK universities to deliver the new Spärck AI Scholarships, a prestigious government-funded programme designed to develop the next generation of artificial intelligence leaders.

Backed by £17.2 million from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), the scholarships form part of a national effort to strengthen the UK’s AI skills pipeline and respond to growing demand for advanced technical expertise and leadership capability across research, industry and the public sector. The programme delivers on a key recommendation of the government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan.

Named in honour of pioneering British computer scientist Karen Spärck Jones, the Spärck AI Scholarships provide full financial support for postgraduate taught Master’s programmes aligned with artificial intelligence, data science and related disciplines.

At Imperial, the scholarships will support students undertaking advanced Master’s training across engineering, computing, natural sciences and public health. Successful scholars will join a highly selective, cohort-based programme that combines academic excellence with leadership development, professional networking and industry engagement, supporting the development of responsible and high-impact AI innovation.

Professor Mary Ryan, Vice-Provost (Research and Enterprise) at Imperial College London, said:  “This investment in fully funded Master’s training is an important and timely commitment to developing the UK’s next generation of AI and STEM leaders. At Imperial, we see every day the transformative effect of advanced training in equipping talented people with the skills and ambition to drive innovation that benefits society.”

She added  “We are excited to be part of the Spärck AI Scholarship scheme and its mission to ensure that outstanding students can contribute to the UK’s rapidly growing technology sector. Initiatives like this strengthen our national talent pipeline and support the UK’s position as a global leader in science, engineering and AI.”

In addition to academic study, Spärck AI Scholars will take part in structured cohort activities throughout the year, designed to foster collaboration, leadership development and engagement with the wider AI community. The programme also offers opportunities for industry exposure, mentorship and professional networking, with the option to apply for AI-related work placements with partner organisations.

The first cohort of Spärck AI Scholars will begin their studies at Imperial in October 2026.
