Nick is responsible for developing and providing leadership to the delivery of the College’s research and enterprise strategy, and for enhancing the quality, impact, management and delivery of research in the College.
The Vice-Provost (Research and Enterprise) oversees Imperial’s six Global institutes which promote inter-disciplinary working to meet some of the greatest challenges faced by society.

Excellence Fund for Frontier Research
The College’s Strategy 2015-20 encourages Imperial to act courageously and innovatively when pursuing new partnerships and opportunities and sets out Imperial’s intention to invest funds and pursue the new and the risky. The Excellence Fund for Frontier Research has been established to support research ideas which are potential breakthrough programs that have the potential to put Imperial in a leadership position, even if the ideas have not yet received outside funding.

The Vice-Provost (Research and Enterprise) is a member of the College’s Provost Board and is responsible for championing Imperial's research and enterprise, supporting academics, and developing the College's Research Strategy. The Vice-Provost (Research and Enterprise) is also the lead in facilitating and developing strong relationships with key external partners, identifying potential new research areas, influencing funders and government, and coordinating an effective College response to opportunities.
To support this role the Vice-Provost (Research and Enterprise) has an Advisory Group. Membership consists of key research stakeholders from across the College and includes regular updates from key external stakeholders (e.g. Research Councils). The plan of business for the year covers areas of strategic interest and takes into account external events (e.g. government consultations of interest). Agenda items can range from exploration of the benefits of formal partnerships with specific external organisations to investigating best practice processes for research prize nominations.
The Vice-Provost (Research and Enterprise) also chairs the Cross-College Research Proposals Review Group (CCRPRG). This group allocates internal or devolved funding and adjudicates between competing external funding proposals as appropriate. Membership consists of the Faculty Vice-Deans for Research and faculty research strategy support staff.
The Advisory Group and CCRPRG are supported by the Funding Strategy team in the Research Office.
