Working with DAS

As a deaf student I always had support from the disability service in Edinburgh so contacting them at Imperial was an obvious thing to do. I first spoke to my departmental disability officer, or the DDO and then to DAS, which is the Disability Advisory Service. Because I have what is termed a ‘sensory impairment’ I needed to provide a statement from my doctor, but there is an online process for submitting this as well as booking an appointment.

As a new PhD I didn’t really know what support would be available to me but during the appointment with the advisor we discussed it and the suggestion to my department was that I get my own office space to minimise noise. I am also going on one-to-one inclusive technology training to see what other things the university has that might be able to support me.

Using Panopto

I used Media Hopper when I was at Edinburgh to get captions for lectures and stuff which worked fine, so I was a little worried that Imperial would be different, but Panopto seems fine. Imperial also has live captions for teams which is helpful too. I am still new to the PhD programme, and I am sure there will be other things that I need to learn but for now I am pretty happy that my needs are being supported.
