Under the Researcher Links scheme offered within the Newton Fund, Fudan University will be holding a 3-day workshop on the above theme in Shanghai, China on 10-12 September 2019. The workshop is being coordinated by Prof Xiao Yun Xu (Department of Chemical Engineering, Imperial College London, UK) and Prof Zhihui Dong (Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, China), and will have contributions from other leading researchers from the UK and China.

The aim of this interdisciplinary workshop is to bring together established researchers, early career researchers and other stakeholders to discuss technical challenges in 4D flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computational modelling of aortic dissection, with a focus on clinical applications. Aortic dissection (AD) is the most catastrophic disease of the aorta. It has a 40% mortality rate at 5 years. Current treatment of TBAD (dissections affecting the arch and descending aorta) is not always effective and, more importantly, it is difficult for clinicians to decide which patient is best treated with medicine and which patient would benefit from early endovascular treatment. Advanced medical imaging combined with computational modelling offers a great opportunity for the development of a new tool to support clinicians in selecting the best treatment for individual patients. This workshop aims to bridge the technology gap between UK and China in this area, by sharing the state-of-the-art in imaging and modelling of AD, thereby promoting multidisciplinary collaborations between clinicians and researchers specialised in this field.

The specific objectives of the workshop are:

  • Discuss clinical challenges in the management of aortic dissections and technical challenges in 4D flow MRI
  • Share 4D flow MRI data analysis methods and discuss their use in image-based computational modelling of aortic dissection hemodynamics and biomechanics
  • Discuss the gap between clinical needs and 4D flow MRI-based computational models for aortic dissections
  • Facilitate new collaborations between the UK and China, with opportunities especially for early career researchers
  • Promote collaborations with stent manufacturers and hospitals

During the workshop early career researchers (ECRs) will have the opportunity to present their research in the form of oral presentation, engage in discussions with established researchers from the UK and China and take part in network sessions.

We are now inviting Early Career Researchers from the UK or China to apply to attend this workshop. All travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the Newton Fund Researcher Links programme.

Eligibility Criteria

Participants must be Early Career Researchers: Early Career Researchers are defined as holding a PhD (or having equivalent research experience) and having up to 10 years post-PhD research experience. Participants must have a research or academic position (a permanent post, research contract, or fellowship etc) at a recognised research institution either in the UK or in China.

Quality Assessment

  • Experience and relevance of the applicant’s research area to the workshop
  • Motivation and contribution to the aims of the workshop
  • Description of the long term impact expected through the participation in the workshop
  • Ability to disseminate workshop’s outcomes
