Organisations, communities and cities across the globe have a growing need to be secure and resilient and the MSc in Security and Resilience offers a unique opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills to support them. Students on this course study the who, what, how and why of global security and resilience threats and responses.

Through lectures, workshops and project work, the science, technology, human activity, policy and implementation of security and resilience is covered, using quantitative and qualitative research methods to explore these areas in-depth.

Course aims

Students will be equipped with essential skills in the security and resilience and allied sectors. They’ll cover a range of topics and skills, including include core training in risk evaluation and research methodologies.

Topics include:

  • Detection and sensing technologies
  • Threat mitigation and policy
  • Behavioural science
  • Critical infrastructure
  • CBRNE
  • Cyber security
  • Transport security

Course content

Security in Context brings together the technical, engineering and science aspects of security. It outlines, through a series of vignettes and interaction with practising security professionals, the key concepts in security and defence studies. The needs and effects of political decisions and the regulatory process is also explored in this module.

Vignettes will include the description of a scenario, discussion of how the process of threat/activity develops, the relevant aspects of security and response, mitigation and control measures and where appropriate, site visits. 

Specific examples will include: the Lockerbie Incident, 7/7 bombings, detection of financial and complex fraud, cyber and hacking attacks. 

Learning and teaching methods

2-hour sessions every Monday across Imperial Autumn term:  October – December 2021 (10 weeks).

Who should attend?

This module is designed as both a taster for potential students interested in completing the MSc in the future and as a standalone CPD course for professionals working in the security and defence arena.

Both STEM graduates with an interest in security and security professionals are welcomed.

  • Who and what are the main security threats and risks across a range of sectors
  • The main physical threats, detection and mitigation measures in key sectors – CBRNE, cyber, nuclear, financial, environmental, healthcare and medical devices, and transport security
  • The specific vulnerabilities of electronic infrastructure, cyber presence, communication networks on the commercial sector
  • Common threats and mitigation measures across all sectors 
  • The behaviour of humans, individual and in groups

Accreditation

All participants will be awarded an Imperial College London Certificate of Attendance on completion of the course.
