Training overview
Calling all Imperial College London staff and students, especially those who travel or collaborate internationally for work or study! We invite you to a specialised training session focusing on LGBTQIA+ inclusivity and safety in countries with anti-LGBTQIA+ laws or attitudes. This training has been organised by the LGBTQIA+ International Travel Support Group and is supported by the EDI Seed Fund.
Why is this training important?
Travel is an integral part of many of our academic and professional responsibilities. However, for our LGBTQIA+ colleagues and students, this journey can pose significant safety risks and emotional burdens. The 'Out in the Field' project by Christina Atchison which surveyed Imperial LGBTQIA+ staff and postgraduate students found that 61% felt uncomfortable, unsafe or in danger when travelling and as such they may choose to self-censor their identity whilst abroad, resulting in cognitive burden and negative mental health impact.
Training objectives
- Increase awareness of the challenges faced when working or studying abroad in countries with anti-LGBTQIA+ laws or attitudes.
- Equip participants with essential communication skills to navigate difficult situations and conversations abroad or support their team members in doing so.
Who is this course for?
This course is open to all staff and students, including LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies.
