We carry out internationally leading research and teaching in structural engineering, linking fundamental understanding with real-world application in the built environment.

Based in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Structural Engineering section works across the design of new structures and the management of ageing infrastructure. Our research is carried out in close collaboration with industry and informs international standards, including the Structural Eurocodes for concrete, steel and seismic design.

The team supports a large doctoral community and delivers teaching across undergraduate Civil Engineering and specialist MSc programmes in Structural Engineering, Concrete Structures, Structural Steel Design and Earthquake Engineering.

“Structural engineering sits at the heart of a safe, resilient and sustainable built environment. Our work combines deep technical understanding with close engagement with industry to help shape the structures society depends on.”
- Professor Leroy Gardner, Head of Structures
