Hybrid steel construction solutions combining traditional and additive manufacturing

Professor Leroy Gardner
9 September 2025

This keynote presented recent advances in hybrid steel construction, which combines conventional fabrication with wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) to enhance structural efficiency, automation and sustainability. Examples including optimised connections, nodes and strengthened members demonstrate how small, strategically placed WAAM additions can deliver disproportionate performance gains while reducing material usage and environmental impact.

8 MW wind turbine tower computational shell buckling benchmark (a.k.a. the ‘round robin’) and selected Eurocode shell buckling developments

Dr Adam Jan Sadowski
14 February 2024

This keynote presented and discussed the results of an international ‘round robin’ exercise on a computational shell buckling benchmark, and some of the novel developments in the new EN 1993-1-6 (2025).
