Science takes on (and hopefully takes down) crime at this latest Imperial public exhibition of fun science and interactive research demonstrations. Join teams pioneering new fingerprint imaging, building crime scene scanning robots and analysing human hairs to link illegal drug use to death.

Criminal Investigations is the latest in Imperial College’s Fringe series of public evening events exploring the livelier side of science. Based on the College’s ground-breaking research, the Fringe programme runs throughout the year to give our friends and supporters an opportunity to meet our researchers and find out more about our work.

What’s happening?

At Criminal Investigations you will be able to:

Collect crime scene evidence by operating our own Robotic detective called De NIRO and the Dyson School of Design Engineering’s Petar Kormushev

Learn to spot dodgy dealings and insider traders at one of our College Cafe short talks hosted by the Business School’s Marcin Kacperczyk

Question our witness line-up and learn about the science of lie-detection, before posing for a mugshot-selfie with the team from I,Science, the science magazine of Imperial

Find out how reports of crime in your local area might affect your active lifestyle with the Business School’s Carol Propper

Debate the morality of legal punishments with students from our Imperial Horizons conflict, crime & justice course

Grow your own fingerprint bacteria with researchers investigating the microbes that call us their home

Test your ability to spot recreational from compulsive gamblers and learn about links between crime and ‘having a flutter’ with Matthew King and the Faculty of Medicine Centre’s Henrietta Bowden-Jones

Explore the chemical clues hidden within fingerprints, revealing and even identifying traces of illicit substances with the Department of Chemical Engineering’s Sergei Kazarian

Treat a stab wound and learn why Imperial doctors, Asif Rahman and Chris Aylwin are working with social workers and ex-gang members from Redthread to tackle youth violence

Test for illegal drugs and find out how blood, urine and even hair can record a history of narcotic use with our Toxicology Unit

Search for traces of blood on a victim’s clothes and match footprints to solve a murder mystery with our Chemistry Society
