Katie Bonner and Helen Stoelting, along with other researchers from the Breathing Together project, facilitated Whoosh Crackle Pop, a free play workshop about breathing for 0-3 year olds and their grown-ups.

Neil Dufton presented his project I Cell involving hands on games as a visual way to communicate science. Neil was joined by Charis Pericleous, Oisin King, Robert Maughan, Emy Bossebouf, Elham Shamsaei, Gaye Saginc Giannoustas, Kelly De-Coteau, Courtney Chatterton-Bartley, Claire Peghaire, Karen Frudd, Graeme Birdsey and Anna Randi.

Neil also gave a talk titled 'A Day in the Life of a Cell Biologist' as part of the festival programme.

Generating Genius

On 12 February Sara Rankin and a group of master's students on the MSc Genes, Drugs and Stem Cells course hosted an all day workshop entitled “the future of biomedical sciences” for 40 black and minority ethnic (BME) students from low socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds from across London. The event was run as one of Generating Genius’s masterclasses. Generating Genius is a charity set up by Tony Sewell that supports talented young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to realise their potential in STEM. Focus Group: Let's Talk About Tuberculosis

9 December 2017

Ishita Marwah, Mica-Tolosa-Wright, Aime Boakye, Luis Berrocal-Almanza, Alice Halliday, Tereza Masonou and Gulfer Yakici led a 15-person strong focus group where audiences from the White City Area met with community-based translators for the screening of translated versions of an animated film about latent TB, and discussions about how to use the animation best to raise awareness and uptake of latent TB testing and treatment.

The 2eMPower programme ran its first STEM workshops for twice-exceptional (2e) students (students that are both gifted and have a learning disability - e.g. dyslexia, ADHD, or Aspergers). The aim of these workshops is to encourage 2e students by developing their self-efficacy and teaching them how to harness their strengths to enable them to achieve their full potential. Bringing together respiratory researchers, people affected by lung conditions and their carers, and visitors to Wellcome Collection, the event used voice and sound as a way to exchange experience, stories and knowledge about breathing and lung health. Synapse

Jill Johnson ran a one-day workshop entitled Synapse with the Girl Guides and the British Society for Immunology. In biology, a synapse is where two cells come together and communicate with each other. In the same way, this workshop brought girls aged 10-17 together with scientists for a day full of science communication, fun and learning.

Synapse allowed the girls to experience immunology through hands-on activities in the Wohl Reach Out Lab at Imperial College London as well as through direct engagement with scientists currently working at the university.

The day was a great success, with 30 participants and eight contributing scientists from the National Heart and Lung Institute. This event was designed to foster interest in science in general and immunology in particular, at an especially important time for girls as they select their GCSE and A levels subjects.

The activity was also delivered by Stef Piatek, Hima Anbunathan, Ernie Wong, Adam Januszewski, Phil James, Simon Brill and Verdiana Martello.
