The UK Research Councils define research impact as 'the demonstrable contribution that excellent research makes to society and the economy' and this is an important outcome for the research which is undertaken within the National Heart and Lung Institute. Original research undertaken at the NHLI has been of societal benefit within the respiratory and cardiovascular fields in many ways, including impacts on the health of the population through better drugs and treatments, improved guidelines for the care of patients, financial gains.  While some of the outcomes of research are immediately apparent in some cases it often come many years after the original research was carried out.

The NHLI's research has directly impacted the cardiovascular and respiratory health of British society by furthering innovative, cutting edge and ground-breaking research initiatives.
