Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for both this 4 year PhD programme and the MultiSci DTP?

The MultiSci MRC DTP at Imperial College is now closed. It was possible for participants to apply for both this 4 year PhD programme as well as the MultiSci MRC DTP. This scheme provided an additional opportunity to study with us on a 1 + 3.5 year scheme. Applications should be made directly via the MultiSci DTP application process (deadline 16th November 2023). Both schemes welcome applications from international candidates. If successful, international students will receive identical funding.

Do I need to apply to the MRes in Biomedical Research?

At this stage you do not need to apply to the MRes in Biomedical Research. If you are not successful in obtaining a place on the 1+3 PhD programme you will be able to apply for the 1-year MRes course afterwards if you wish.

Do I need to submit an application to Imperial College for a PhD?

At this stage you do not need to make a formal application for a PhD. Successful candidates will be sent full details on how to enrol on the course.

Do I need to identify a supervisor and/or project for my application?

Whilst we would encourage candidates to consider areas of research that are of interest to them, candidates should not contact supervisors at this stage. The structure of the 4-year programme allows students to undertake two research projects in different groups during the first year and hence make an informed decision on their PhD project at the end of the first year.

Do I need to include a project proposal with my application?

No, candidates are not required to submit a project proposal. The one-page statement should indicate your motivation and interest in undertaking the 4-year PhD programme.

Can I visit the department? Can I talk to current students?

Due to the high volume of applications received each year, we are unable to accommodate individual visits. Short-listed candidates will be invited for an in-person for interview and will have the opportunity to meet current students at this time. Remote interviews may be considered.

I already have a Masters degree. Can I skip the first year of this programme?

No, this is an integrated 4-year programme and the first year MRes course is therefore a compulsory component. Whilst some students join straight from an undergraduate degree, the majority have already completed taught Masters courses.

Can you give me any advice as to what constitutes a successful application?

Due to the highly competitive nature of our programme, all candidates should meet or expect to achieve the minimum entry criteria (1st class or upper 2:1 first degree or equivalent). All applications are reviewed and short-listed by a panel based on academic criteria. Since we receive a large volume of applications, we are unable to provide individual feedback to unsuccessful applicants.

Am I eligible for the studentship funding

These 4-year PhD Programme in Epidemiology, Evolution and Control of Infectious Diseases studentships provide generous support, including a tax-free stipend to cover living expenses at the UKRI minimum rate, currently £20,622 for the 2023/2024 academic year. Funding covers tuition fees up to the UK home rate fees amount. Students not eligible for UK fees would need to self-fund the additional fees needed for the international rate.

Applications for self-funded places on the MRes are also welcomed – please apply separately via the MRes Biomedical Research website.

What is the start date?

The programme will begin at the start of the autumn term 2024.

When will I know the outcome of my application?

Due to large volume of applications, we are only able to contact applicants shortlisted for interview and are unfortunately unable to provide individual feedback to unsuccessful applicants. If you have applied for 2024/2025 entry, interviews are expected to take place in early February 2024. If you have not been contacted by this time, unfortunately you have not been shortlisted.
