Inguinal and Femoral Hernia Repair
The Skills Programme partners with SiMPEDIA to provide trainees with advanced high-fidelity hernia repair simulator that can be used to teach both inguinal hernia repair (direct and indirect using mesh). At the request of trainees, who often have limited exposure to femoral hernia repair in theatre, the Skills Programme collaborated with the SiMPEDIA team to add this procedure to the model. This demonstrates the evidence-based clinician led approach the Skills Programme takes to model development, ensuring broader surgical training opportunities.
This model is designed for junior general surgical trainees (ST3 and ST4) to practice open hernia repair under consultant supervision. Every ST3 and ST4 General Surgical trainee in London has the opportunity to train on this simulation model.
Training progression
ST5 and ST6 trainees also receive hernia training, but at this level utilise an animal cadaveric tissue model is used, receiving training for a laparoscopic TAPP procedure.
