robert borlandFollowing his degree in Physics from Imperial in 1958, Robert ‘Bob’ Borland, became the Head of Physics at the National Physical Laboratory. After researching where he could direct his gift, he chose to support Imperial’s on-going work in Mathematical Physics, an area he held a particular passion for.

These Fellowships are funded by the generous legacy gift of Robert Borland and are designed to enable early career post-doctoral researchers to devote serious study to problems in the area of Mathematical Physics, Condensed Matter Physics and Scientific Computation. One Borland Fellowship is awarded every other year as a two year appointment in the Department of Mathematics, starting October 2020.

These posts provide an excellent opportunity for those seeking to pursue an academic career in condensed matter physics, mathematical physics, or scientific computation. Candidates for a Borland Fellowship are expected to have proven research ability in one of these areas. Candidates will demonstrate the potential for strong leadership qualities in the subject, as illustrated, for example, through showing initiative and independence on research projects.

As well as holding a good honours degree and a PhD in mathematics or a closely related subject, Borland Fellows will be expected to demonstrate exceptional ability in their chosen research areas. They will have an outstanding research record commensurate with their level of experience, as demonstrated, for example, through an outstanding thesis, publications and conference presentations. In addition to pursuing research, Fellows will be encouraged to undertake some teaching duties in the Department of Mathematics. The ability to teach mathematics at undergraduate and postgraduate level is essential, as demonstrated by excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to give effective presentations.

Application process takes place every year starting approx. in September for around 2 months.  Please view vacancies website.
