The Department of Mathematics takes student welfare seriously and offers a number of support avenues to help students both with the transition to university as well as their time throughout their degree. Students should always feel that they can approach someone in the Department for support on academic or welfare issues.
Induction Procedures
During the first few weeks of a Degree Programme, both the College and Department put on detailed induction programmes to help with the transition to university and understanding the programme.
Departmental Tutorial System
Every undergraduate has a Personal Tutor who is there as the first point of contact on any academic or personal issue. First-year students meet with their tutor both in small groups and individually, and in subsequent years students have a number of required individual meetings, in addition to which they are encouraged to meet with their Personal Tutors as and when needed.
The Department’s Year Tutors and Undergraduate Senior Tutor oversee the tutorial system along with the Student Experience Manager, and any of them may be approached with questions or asked for advice. Departmental staff can help point students in the right direction within Imperial, whether the issue relates to health, financial support, housing, international student support or other personal circumstances. The Senior Tutor and Student Experience Manager can also help with more serious issues around interruptions of study or mitigating circumstances.
- Year 1 Tutor: Dr Nicolas Boulle
- Year 2 Tutor: Dr Benjamin Briggs
- Year 3 Tutor: Dr Dean Bodenham
- Year 4 Tutor: Dr Barbara Bravi
- Undergraduate Senior Tutor: Dr Pietro Siorpaes
- Deputy Senior Tutor: Dr Rukia Nuermaimaiti
- Student Experience Manager: Sai Nathan
In addition to supporting the tutorial and academic systems in the Department, the Student Experience Team is concerned with student experience and student wellbeing, and welcomes students to seek advice on any issue related to their time at university. The team can help students access support, navigate university processes and connect with appropriate services across Imperial.

Disability Support
If you have a disability, long-term health condition, neurodiverse condition, or require reasonable adjustments, you should contact the Disability Advisory Service (DAS) for an assessment. Following assessment, departmental support and examination arrangements are coordinated by the Department's disability contacts.

Peer Tutorials
First year students also benefit from the Peer Tutorials. All first year students meet in small groups with an older student weekly to gain support on their academics. These peer tutors, who have been through the first few years of the undergraduate programme, are an excellent source of support for new students just entering university life.

Math Mums and Dads
The Student Union's Mums and Dads scheme partners first year students with students in higher years to make "families", where the higher level students arrange welcome activities to help the first years with their start at university.
College Support
The College has an extensive support programme for students including the Student Support Zone, Student Hub, Student Counselling and Mental Health Advice Service, Disability Advisory Service, Chaplaincy, Financial Support and International Student Support.
For more information on the support the College offers students, students should visit Student Support Zone.
The Student Hub in Sherfield Building provides a central point of contact for students on issues around transcripts, letters of attendance, financial aid and international student support.

Academic Student Representation & Feedback
All the courses provided by the Mathematics Department are constantly evolving.
Student input into teaching happens through a number of channels. On a formal basis, there are Staff-Student Committee meetings, student representatives and surveys such as the National Student Survey, Student Experience Survey (SES) and the Department's End-of-Module Surveys. Students may also provide feedback directly to staff throughout the academic year.
"Town hall" meetings and Year level meetings are also held where students are welcome to raise and discuss issues with senior teaching staff.
Support and Feedback
Staff Student Committee
The Department has an active Staff Student Committee, and students can raise matters about lectures and teaching through your committee representative. Meetings are held regularly throughout the academic year and provide a forum for constructive discussion between students and staff.
Student feedback and actions arising from these meetings are considered and implemented by student representatives together with the Department's Senior Tutor, Director of Undergraduate Studies and Student Experience Team. When introducing new elements to programmes and services, the Department conducts internal reviews and actively seeks student feedback as part of this process.
Student Surveys
Student surveys are an invaluable source of information on student satisfaction and for ongoing review of the Course programmes.
Departmental End-of-Module Surveys
The Department runs its own internal End-of-Module Surveys, which are distributed by Module Leads at the conclusion of each module.
These surveys give students an opportunity to share feedback on their learning experience and help the Department review and improve modules for future cohorts.
For modules taken outside the Department of Mathematics, including BPES, Horizons and I-Explore modules, students should follow the feedback arrangements provided by the host department.
Student Experience Survey (SES)
The Student Experience Survey (SES) gathers feedback on a range of university services and Imperial College Union. The survey focuses on wider aspects of university life beyond teaching and assessment.
The survey is open to non-final-year undergraduate students and normally runs during the Autumn and Spring Terms.
National Student Survey (NSS)
The National Student Survey (NSS) is an annual survey for final-year undergraduate students.
The survey seeks feedback on academic support, learning resources, assessment and feedback, and the overall student experience. Results are published nationally and contribute to future improvements across the higher education sector.
All surveys are confidential, and students are strongly encouraged to participate.
