I-X, Imperial’s flagship AI initiative, launches new MSc in Artificial intelligence commencing in October 2024.

Imperial's new MSc Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovation will equip budding AI leaders with the fundamental skills to drive AI innovation and deploy AI applications for real-world impact.  As the first full I-X degree programme, it will focus on the applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning systems in a wide range of industrial and scientific sectors such as finance, healthcare, and robotics, where AI innovation is paramount.

"I-X is an ideal environment to host this new programme with our co-location of interdisciplinary researchers and focus on real-world impact." Professor Eric Yeatman Chair of the Board for I-X

Reflective of I-X itself, the programme is interdisciplinary in nature and has been specifically designed in collaboration with the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Engineering and Imperial College Business School.

The twelve-month, full-time programme will be delivered primarily in new facilities in the Translation and Innovation Hub, home of I-X. Students will benefit from being a part of the unique White City Innovation District and, by extension, Imperial’s WestTech Corridor - a globally competitive hub for entrepreneurship, innovation, and technological advancement.

I-X’s close ties with business through its corporate membership scheme will be an additional incentive for students looking to pursue new opportunities with industry. The entrepreneurial environment of I-X further underpins one of the programmes key features in providing graduates with the principles of python programming, machine learning and innovation management concepts, that can be readily applied across a range of sectors.

Speaking of the new programme Professor Eric Yeatman, Chair of the Board for I-X, said: "I-X is an ideal environment to host this new programme with our co-location of interdisciplinary researchers and focus on real-world impact. We’re looking forward to welcoming the first cohort of students, to contributing to their careers, and also to the positive impact they will have on our growing community."

Closing the AI skills gap

Despite rapid advancements in AI, there continues to be a skill shortage amongst employees with the needed technical proficiency to support ambitious business goals. Demand for AI skills, particularly those in programming languages, robotics, and machine learning algorithms, are soaring. I-X’s new MSc seeks to address this by equipping graduates with a deeper knowledge of AI fundamentals in conjunction with the business skillset to develop innovative technologies in the marketplace. Students will not only gain entrepreneurial acumen but the expertise to navigate the AI landscape ethically and responsibility while working on a wide range of application areas.

Dr Sen Wang, MSc Programme Director, said: “This specifically designed degree will attract graduate as well as professional candidates interested in learning and in applying Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, either as an instrument for running organisations of all kinds or to progress quickly in corporate innovation careers.”

Interdisciplinary challenges

Attracting over 200 researchers from across Imperial, from 19 different departments, I-X drives digital transformations in data sciences and machine learning to address real world interdisciplinary challenges. I-X is recognised by Schmidt Sciences in supporting the next generation of AI leaders in hosting the I-X Centre for AI in Science which supports over 130 years of Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellows.

Prospective students and those interested in finding out more information are encouraged to visit the MSc Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovation page. Applications are now being taken for the 2024 academic year and round two application deadlines will close on Thursday 4 April 2024.
