AB - The circadian variability of peak expiratory flow (PEF) was related to endogenous adrenaline and cortisol concentrations in plasma in asthmatic volunteers. PEF varied more closely in phase with adrenaline than cortisol. When PEF (and endogenous adrenaline) were lowest at 0400, the bronchomotor response to infused and inhaled exogenous adrenaline was maximum. Changes in plasma adrenaline probably reflected altered secretory rates as adrenaline clearance did not change as a function of time. © 1980.
