Petros Nihoyannopoulos

What is your role at NHLI?

I am a Professor of Cardiology, a consultant cardiologist, and part of the Cardiovascular Imaging research group. I am also the lead for echocardiography services at Hammersmith Hospital.

What is your research about?

My research is on new developments on cardiac function using echocardiography from animals to humans.

What have been the highlights of your career path so far?

The promotion to Clinical Professor of Cardiology, and the creation and establishment of this unique Master's course on Cardiovascular Ultrasound.

What led you to choosing your career in this particular field?

I chose this particular field of medicine because echocardiography is a powerful and interactive diagnostic tool for solving most problems in clinical cardiology. To do this however you need expertise and a high quality service.

What is your favourite part of your role at NHLI?

Interacting with amazing people of different subspecialties.

What advice would you give yourself as a young person about to start your career?

To decide what they like and enjoy doing in their career and focus on this.

What would you be doing if you weren’t in the world of academia or science?

I do not know. Probably trying harder to get into it!

What advice would you give to students considering joining NHLI?

Try to excel in the chosen field. Spend hours on your chosen project and interact with as many experts in the field as possible.
